Good Samaritan was selected as the Innovator of the Year at the Alberta Continuing Care Association Awards of Excellence! In the advisory, ACCA congratulated Good Samaritan on its groundbreaking Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Reconciliation (EDIR) Initiative, which set a new standard for innovation in the continuing care sector. ACCA also highlighted Good Samaritan for its dedication to fostering an inclusive culture and challenging the status quo, which has truly elevated the quality of care for all.
Good Samaritan President and CEO Dr. Katherine Chubbs accepted the award at the Awards of Excellence ceremony during the ACCA 2024 Conference, saying she accepted on behalf of the Good Samaritan family.
“Before I came to Good Samaritan four years ago, I spoke with the board about the need to focus on reconciliation and EDI since then. The board knew this work aligned with our mission and worked with our team to begin an aggressive journey toward advancing EDI and Reconciliation. Our goals are threefold: to do our part in righting historical wrongs, to make Good Samaritan homes where everyone feels a sense of being and belonging, and to inspire others through our experience to carry the necessary and critical work of EDIR forward.”
I am so grateful to our Lord for the blessing of being able to serve as we do. I am grateful to the ACCA for this recognition. It is appreciated and will mean a lot to our teams as we share it with them.
I am grateful to our amazing team of frontline employees, leaders and board for embracing and living our value of inclusion—special thanks to Steve Kovacic, James Frey, Paola Gatica and others for their leadership in EDIR. I’d like to acknowledge our Board chair Marlene Raasok and leadership team behind me. We are so blessed to have you at Good Samaritan.
On a personal note, I am grateful to my mother, a strong Indigenous woman, for her inspiration and for teaching me that women can do anything; it is OK, in fact, wonderful, to be different, seniors are the foundation of our society, and Indigenous people deserve to have the same life experience and outcomes as other Canadians. I lift this award to you today. I know you are proud of how Good Samaritans have used their influence and voices to make our world a better place.”
